Chef Paul Gayler MBE

Paul Gayler MBE was, until the end of December 2013, Executive Chef at London's world-renowned Lanesborough Hotel on Hyde Park Corner. Paul opened the hotel in 1991, establishing it as one the world’s finest hotel destinations.

Recognised as one of the UK's culinary masters, he is an accomplished food writer and chef author with over 22 titles to his name, as well as being a regular contributor to food journals and a host of popular television food programmes.

Born in 1955, his passion for food began as a young boy, helping out his mother with a family run catering business. By the age of 16 he was attending a local catering school where he excelled with honours, then later going on to hone his skills in some of the best kitchens in Britain and France.

In 1982 Paul was appointed Chef Director at London's famous Inigo Jones Restaurant, (1 Michelin star) where he pioneered vegetarian haute cuisine. In order to diversify the quality of vegetarian food available to restaurant goers, he introduced the ‘Menu Potager’, a spectacular seven-course gourmet vegetarian menu that was critically acclaimed.

In 1989 he opened the £40 million Halkin Hotel in Belgravia. He was responsible for all the food preparation at the hotel, but he also turned his hand to the development of dishes as a consultant for Marks and Spencer, Tesco and British Airways for Concord.

Gayler has received numerous prestigious accolades including twice winning the Mouton Cadet competition and twice finalist in Paris at the Prix Pierre Taittinger competition. He has featured in Debretts ‘People of Today’ since 1992, in the Who's Who of Chefs in the World and features in the Best of British menu book amongst others.

Gayler also fundraises for a number of charitable organisations. He set up ‘Chefs for Heroes’, to raise money in support of wounded armed services personnel. He has also been active with the ‘Teenage Cancer Trust’. To date he has raised nearly £400,000.

In 2012 Gayler was awarded an MBE, (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for services to the hospitality industry and charities, on the Queens Diamond Jubilee Birthday Honours List, which recognises nominees who are judged to have demonstrated outstanding achievements and service to society.

At present Gayler continues to consult, supporting the industry with his 40 years of experience at the highest level.
